AI storyboard, motion or full video: which should you use?

Use a storyboard to test the story cheaply, illustrated motion with voiceover for a watchable show at low cost, and full video when the story is proven and you want moving footage with dialogue and sound.

The three looks

  • Storyboard: one illustrated frame per scene with the script on screen. Fastest and cheapest (1 credit per second in AISP at the time of writing).
  • Motion: illustrated scenes with a narrator voice and camera movement. Feels like a show (2 credits per second).
  • Video: generated moving footage for every scene. In AISP the video tiers also generate their own dialogue and sound: Draft (11/sec, a fast rough look), Cinema (31/sec, 720p) and Cinema Pro (53/sec, full 1080p).

When each one is right

Storyboard is the writer’s tool. It shows whether the scenes are in the right order and whether the story makes sense, for very little. It is also a format in its own right for read-along stories.

Motion is the sweet spot for many series: comics-style episodes, bedtime stories, explainers and narrated anthology shows. A narrator voice and camera moves over consistent illustrations hold attention well, at a small fraction of the cost of video.

Video is for when you want performance: characters moving and speaking. It costs many times more per second, so use it once the story has earned it, and try Draft first to see the whole episode play.

Switching between them

In AISP you choose the look when you create the series, and the Look screen says you can change it before generating any episode. That makes a sensible workflow possible: write and check episode 1 in Storyboard, then switch to Motion or video for the episodes you want to show off. The picker shows a sample of each look’s output.

Scene length limits differ: up to 15 seconds per scene for Storyboard and Motion, and 5 to 20 seconds on the video tiers.

Questions

Which look has the best character consistency?

All looks use the same locked style, character descriptions and portraits. Storyboard and Motion are built from stills seeded by the portraits; video scenes start from a keyframe or from the previous footage, so check a Draft before paying for a higher tier.

Does Motion have voices?

Yes, a narrator voice reads over the illustrated scenes. The video tiers generate their own dialogue and sound instead.
