How to make a cartoon series with AI
Choose a flat 2D cartoon style and lock it, give the AI a premise and let it write the cast and season, then generate each episode as illustrated scenes with voiceover or as video.
What a cartoon style needs
Cartoons read well because they are simple: bold clean lines, flat colour and expressive silhouettes. The risk with AI is that models add depth of field, lens flare or 3D shading, which makes it look like a different show from scene to scene.
AISP’s Cartoon style asks for flat 2D cartoon illustration with bold clean linework, flat cel-shaded colour, simplified expressive shapes and graphic silhouettes, and explicitly excludes photoreal, 3D rendering, film grain and camera lens effects. Character portraits are painted as character design sheets.
Motion is a good fit for cartoons
You do not need full video for a watchable cartoon. Motion renders illustrated scenes with a narrator voice and camera movement, at 2 credits per second at the time of writing, which feels like a show for a fraction of the cost of video. Storyboard, at 1 credit per second, shows one frame per scene with the script on screen and is useful for checking the story.
When you want real animation, the video tiers render moving scenes with their own dialogue and sound: Draft is the cheapest way to see a whole episode play, and Cinema and Cinema Pro cost more for a better picture.
Writing the show
Comedy and cartoons live on character. Pick the Comedy or Animation genre, or let the agent decide, and say in your premise what makes the main character funny. The agent decides the cast size from the premise rather than defaulting to three. Read each script before you render, and use Rewrite if a joke does not land; you can also write an episode yourself.
Questions
Can I make it vertical for phones?
Yes. Choose Vertical (9:16) when you create the series; Widescreen and Square are the other options.
What does the Storyboard look include?
One illustrated frame per scene with the script on screen. It is the cheapest look and the quickest way to check pacing.
